Criccieth
Criccieth in Gwynedd, North Wales is a small town but its very compactness makes it an attractive resort for short breaks or indeed a family holiday. The resort is located on the beautiful Llyn peninsula, the finger of land pointing toward Ireland in the North West corner of Wales. Being to the West of the Snowdonia National Park, travellers will probably arrive via the A497 and the first thing they notice is Criccieth Castle sitting high on the rocky promontory that overlooks Cardigan Bay and separates Criccieth's East and West beaches.

Criccieth is located on the southern coast of the Lleyn Peninsula and has the best of both worlds, as far as the weather is concerned. The long arm of the Lleyn Peninsula shelters Criccieth from the worst of the prevailing weather from the west; it also traps the warm waters of the Gulf Stream to create a climate completely different from that of the mountains of Snowdonia. On these pages, it is hoped that you will find everything you need to know to enjoy your stay in Criccieth, the 'Pearl of Wales on the shores of Snowdonia'. | Criccieth's history |
The origin of the name of this little town, and even how it should be spelt today, gives rise to much discussion locally - even strong feelings. The first mention was when Llywelyn Fawr built the first castle there in the 13th century on the rock named Cruciaeth. The next, and most official, is written in the charter making the town a borough and signed by Edward I at Cardigan on 22 November 1284 when the place is identified as Crykyth. In medieval times the "township" was known as Treferthyr. (Martyr's Town). It is suggested, but not definitely proven, that this refers to St Catherine for whom the parish church is named. Today the primary school is known as Ysgol Treferthyr. for more informatin visit website

North Wales top-ten
The North Wales coast begins on the Dee Estuary, an important feeding ground for migrating birds, and continues through the seaside towns of Prestatyn, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno. Next comes the medieval town of Conwy with its picturesque castle. As the coast becomes more scenic with views towards Ynys Mon (Anglesey), you reach the university city of Bangor, site of the oldest cathedral in continuous use in Britain. Anglesey has many attractions of coast and countryside, including Llanfair P.G.: the world-famous village with the long name (Llanfairpwllgwyngyll-gogerychwyrndrobwllllant-ysiliogogogoch). Continuing on the coast you reach Caernarfon with its dominating castle, then down the Llyn peninsula to Aberdaron – overlooking Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island), said to be the burial place of 20,000 saints.
Welsh Golfing Holidays
Course Introduction and Description: Founded in 1905, this undulating hill top course is really golf as it was and should be. Set overlooking Cticcieth Castle, the course is a very good test of golf being some 5500 yards off the back tees. Natural terrain and sheep as moving obstacles, moveable obstructions or possibly loose impediments! This is a nice little course that complements the more traditional links and parkland courses on the Llyn Peninsula. Very good value for money and played between April and September. Criccieth GC has the distinction of having 3 Prime Ministers play the course on the same day ie: messers Bonar Law, Lloyd George and Churchill.

North Wales Coast
The North Wales coast has a lot of excellent value accommodation in a variety of seaside towns, making it ideal for long or short walking breaks. And since the A55 has made access easier and quicker, the coast has never been so accessible. Stretching from Prestatyn (also the terminus for Offa’s Dyke and the Dysarth Way) to Bangor in the west, the North Wales Path connects traditional seaside promenades with quieter villages. Get the train from Deganwy to Llandudno town, and then walk back around the Great Orme and alongside Conwy Sands for great views, which will include Liverpool Bay, Anglesey, and Snowdonia’s range. Or, take the train to Abergele, roll your trousers up, and paddle your way back to Rhyl. Llanfairfechan is a good place to disembark. Follow the coast path alongside the Lavan Sands Nature Reserve, before heading inland to see Aber Falls.
